🧾 How Sales Tax Is Calculated

Adding tax: Tax = Price × (Rate ÷ 100), and Total = Price + Tax. For a $100 item at 7.25%, tax is $7.25 and the total is $107.25.

Removing tax (reverse sales tax): Pre-tax price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). For a $107.25 total at 7.25%, the pre-tax price is $100.00.

📍 State vs. Local Sales Tax

The state rate is only part of the story. Counties and cities often add their own sales tax, so the combined rate at checkout can be 1–5% higher than the state base rate. Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon — have no statewide sales tax (though some Alaska localities do). Always confirm the combined rate for your exact location.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. Sales tax = Price × (Rate ÷ 100). For a $100 item at 7.25%, the tax is $7.25 and the total is $107.25.

How do I find the price before tax (reverse sales tax)?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal: Pre-tax price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). A $107.25 total at 7.25% works out to $100.00 before tax. Use the calculator's 'Remove tax' mode to do this automatically.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that some Alaska localities still charge a local sales tax.

Is the sales tax rate the same everywhere in a state?

No. The state sets a base rate, but counties and cities often add their own sales tax. The combined rate at checkout can be several percent higher than the state base rate, so confirm the rate for your exact location.

What is the highest combined sales tax in the US?

Combined state-plus-local rates can exceed 10% in parts of states like Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Washington. California has the highest state base rate at 7.25%.
