🏃 The Pace Formula
Pace = Time ÷ Distance. If you run 5 miles in 40 minutes, your pace is 40 ÷ 5 = 8:00 per mile. Once you know your pace, you can rearrange the formula to find Time = Pace × Distance or Distance = Time ÷ Pace - which is exactly what the mode buttons above do.
⏱️ Pace vs. Speed
Pace (minutes per mile or km) tells you how long it takes to cover a distance - lower is faster. Speed (mph or km/h) tells you how far you go per hour - higher is faster. To convert pace to speed, divide 60 by your pace in minutes: a 10:00/mile pace is 60 ÷ 10 = 6.0 mph.
🎯 Using Pace to Predict Race Times
Once your pace is set, the results below show projected finish times for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon at that same steady pace. Real race times usually run a bit slower than training pace over longer distances - use these as a starting target, not a guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide your total time by your total distance: Pace = Time ÷ Distance. If you run 5 miles in 40 minutes, your pace is 40 ÷ 5 = 8:00 per mile.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes. A 10:00 per mile pace is 60 ÷ 10 = 6.0 mph. To go the other way, divide 60 by your speed: 6 mph is 60 ÷ 6 = 10:00 per mile.
How do I convert a minutes-per-mile pace to minutes-per-km?
Divide your minutes-per-mile pace by 1.609344 (since 1 mile = 1.609344 km). An 8:00 per mile pace is 480 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 298 seconds, or about 4:58 per km.
What pace do I need to run a sub-4-hour marathon?
You need to average about 9:09 per mile (or 5:41 per km) for the full 26.2188 miles. Total time = 4 hours ÷ 26.2188 miles ≈ 9.15 minutes per mile.
Is my race pace usually faster or slower than my training pace?
For longer races like a marathon, most runners run a bit slower than their easy training pace once fatigue sets in over the full distance. For shorter races like a 5K, race pace is typically faster than easy training pace because the effort is much higher.
What is a good running pace for a beginner?
There's no single 'good' pace — it depends on fitness level and goals. Many beginners run in the 10:00-14:00 per mile range and improve with consistent training. Focus on finishing comfortably and building mileage before chasing a faster pace.
