⏱️ How to Calculate Hours Worked
Hours worked = (End time − Start time) − break. From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute break: 8 hours − 0.5 = 7.5 hours.
Decimal vs. hours:minutes. Payroll uses decimal hours, so 7 hours 30 minutes = 7.5. To convert minutes to decimal, divide by 60 (e.g. 15 min ÷ 60 = 0.25).
Overnight shifts are handled automatically — if the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator counts past midnight.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract your start time from your end time, then subtract any break. From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute break, that's 8 hours − 0.5 = 7.5 hours.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. So 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes = 0.5 hours, and 45 minutes = 0.75 hours. Payroll systems use decimal hours.
Does the calculator handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and counts the hours correctly.
What is 7 hours and 30 minutes in decimal?
7.5 hours, because 30 minutes is half an hour (30 ÷ 60 = 0.5).
